NEW L.A. Office

DTR Los Angeles Office


DTR Consulting Services, the "Building Science Guys", have opened a new Los Angeles Area Office, just north of the downtown area, to better serve our Clients in the L.A. metropolitan area. This office is in addition to the current Orange County office in Irvine and two other northern California offices. This new office location allows for the continued expansion of DTR and also serves as a central location to service our clients in a more efficient manner.

Overseeing this new office is the Office Leader | Senior Building Envelope Architect, Kirk O'Brien, AIA, RCI, NCARB. Kirk brings with him a long history of experience and connection to the local community. DTR Consulting Services continues to work with Building Owners, Developers and Architectural/Engineering Clients in the Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego Area since early 2003. This move allows DTR to build upon our current client base and to expand our Firm to better serve our current and future A/E Clients.

DTR will also be recruiting the best new technical staff, the area has available. He will be in charge mentoring new staff members into the existing DTR Culture and provide guidance for both experienced and junior members in the DTR approach to serving our Architectural Clients. DTR will be looking to hire both Building Envelope Consultants specialized in Building Science, Technical Architects, Specifiers and Field Quality Control Staff.

Tom has over 29 years in the Architectural/Engineering and Construction Industry.  His experience ranges from an Architectural Project Manager, Construction Administrator/Inspector, Construction/ Program Manager, Carpenter, Facilities Planning & Design Manager, Technical Specifier, and Forensic Investigative Consultant to Office Leader, then Managing Principal.  Before founding DTR in 2002, he successfully managed the launch of a new expansion office for a national A/E Firm to become the 3rd most profitable office in its first year.  

He continues to utilize his experience working with A/E clients, Facilities Directors, Developers and Design/Build Contractors providing technical support in a variety of professional services. With more than 300 projects and billions of dollars in construction experience, he continues to strive to make this Firm the model of all consulting firms.

Leading the expanding role of building science in the design & construction fields, assisting clients in the selection of proper exterior skin wall and roof assemblies including roofing through proper details and specifications is his direction. He is also heavily involved in Peer/ Constructability Reviews for many clients improving the bid documents to reduce RFI's, potential change orders and reduce the time A/E professionals expend needlessly in the construction phase.

He has received numerous professional certifications and awards from the Building Envelope Science Institute (BESI) & Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) as well being part of many project awards over the length of his career with DTR.

Architect | Building Envelope/Waterproofing Consultant | Specifier |Principal in the Firm

John Guill, a registered architect & more recently honored with Fellowship in CSI. In charge of our San Francisco Area Office, John has better than 30 years of architectural & engineering experience in a wide variety of civic, educational, and institutional projects for various government agencies as well as corporate & private clients.

He utilizes his ever expanding technical knowledge and understanding to develop proper construction specifications, identify proper building materials/ products and offer quality control/coordination reviews of our client projects. In addition John is part of our Building Sciences division using hygrothermal modeling to verify exterior enclosure assembly are constructed properly. His strong construction and architectural background offer a professional perspective on constructability and coordination issues to the Design team while his experience with numerous project-delivery methods and Building Information Modeling (BIM) are a resource for non-traditional delivery and procurement methods and integrated project design.

He has received numerous awards & recognitions for architecture, building specifications and industry education, including honors by Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH). In 2012 he was honored with "Fellowship" in (CSI) Construction Specification Institute for his many years of both local and national service particularly in educational seminars, webinars and public education.

Director of HR, Organizational Leadership & Business Development | Principal in the Firm

Gail is a Senior Certified Professional in Human Resources with 25 years of diversified experience working in business development and HR operations across multiple industries. She is a highly focused leader whose high energy allows her to move easily from vision and strategy to implementation, problem resolution and follow through.

Gail leads the talent management, talent review, and succession planning efforts, identifying opportunities for individual and organizational development.  She is able to motivate participation and support from individuals and teams at all levels with a proven ability to develop strategic alliances and build lasting relationships. Gail is a dynamic team builder, consistently inspiring, motivating and coaching others toward success. She is responsible for the design and delivery of learning initiatives across the company including continuing education, professional development, performance management, new employee onboarding and organizational development.

Gail has experience in business planning and market research, relationship development, team building, presentations and proposals, public relations and community outreach.  Having worked on both private and public sector projects, Gail’s passion includes healthcare, education, hospitality, and local, state and federal work due to the impact these projects have on our communities.  Gail brings a wide range of experience in HR, strategic planning, finance, communications, management, training, and outreach. Gail joined DTR in 2002.

Building Envelope Specialist | Forensic Investigator

Kirk O'Brien, a registered architect & NCARD certified. Kirk is the Office Leader overseeing our Los Angeles Office. He has better than 30 years of architectural & engineering experience in a wide variety of civic, educational, and institutional projects for various government agencies as well as corporate & private clients.

Graduated from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree in 1983, his early architectural career focused primarily on Multi-family, Institutional, Educational and Commercial projects, as well as Single Family Residential work. He has substantial experience as a Building Envelope Architect providing Quality Control and Assurance services for developers, builders, owners, insurance and lending institutions. Architectural Forensic Expert, defending clients, construction companies, architectural firms and other professionals, experienced in depositions and testifying in courts of law. Highly experienced in monitoring construction progress, providing field inspections and detailing in the field to avoid potential building envelope failures, future defects and litigation.

Past president of the San Diego Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (2008). Worked part time as adjunct professor at The New School of Architecture in San Diego, California. Kirk is also trained and certified in the California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) 'Safety Assessment Program' as a Disaster Services Worker/ Building Safety Evaluator. Deployed by the State of California to El Centro in 2010 after the Easter Earthquake to assess building and public facilities damage.

Jim Syme, AIA, CSI, RCI

Senior Building Envelope Architect

Jim Syme is an experienced architect, registered in multiple states, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects on time and on budget.  His leadership and management expertise allows him to motivate teams and create a collaborative work environment with internal staff and those of the entire project team.  His deep knowledge of building science and design of the building envelope, makes him invaluable to our team.
Jim is a senior project manager with a diverse background of project types and a thorough understanding of construction drawings and specifications.   In addition, he has an extensive expertise in building codes, exterior envelope concepts, and design sensitive detailing.  His experience, technical background and knowledge of the building industry make him ideal in the development of construction specifications, research and identification of proper building materials and construction methods for our Clients.

Jim is working with multiple projects in overseeing technical details on our building envelope and waterproofing projects, as well as our remedial architectural drawings, including technical project specifications for various projects. In addition he is an asset in the field working with contractors, owners and the design team.  He is an integral part of our team and continues to acquire additional training and professional certifications to make him one the best in the industry, since joining DTR.

Senior Specification Writer | Quality Control Specilaist

Spencer is a Registered Architect, Certified Construction Specifier and experienced senior project manager with a diverse background of project types and a thorough understanding of construction drawings and specifications.  With more than 30 years of architectural experience in a wide variety of civic, educational, commercial and institutional projects for various corporate clients, government agencies as well as private clients.

His experience, technical background and knowledge of the building industry make him ideal in the development of construction specifications, research and identification of proper building materials and construction methods for our Clients.  Spencer is in our San Francisco North Bay Office to develop and produce project specifications for various projects working with our technical staff in all our offices to best meet the needs of our Clients.  He also serves as part of our Constructability Team in combing through construction documents for inconsistencies and constructability issues to help assist our A/E Clients in delivering the quality documents into the Bid & Construction Phases of a project.

With his previous experience, Spencer is an integral part of our team and continues to acquire additional training and certifications to make him the best in the industry, since joining DTR Consulting Services in 2012


Linda Stiles

Operational & Financial Manager

Linda is our financial guru.  She has previously served as a corporate Controller and Director of Operations and Business Manager for both profit and non-profit companies.  She brought with her over 25 years of financial experience and operational experience to DTR.  Linda soon after joining our team in 2015 has become an integral part of our operation, improving our financial standing and streamlining our operation.   

She is instrumental in assisting with on-boarding of new team members, working with client accounting departments, working with management in getting contracts developed and executed.  She is an integral part of our team and continues to acquire new knowledge, training and professional certifications to make DTR the best in the industry.

Mike Rice, CSI, CDT

Senior Hardware Consultant

Mr. Rice is a Past President of the San Francisco Chapter Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and a past Associate Principle with DTR Consulting Services. His work highly specializes in commercial door & hardware consulting with an emphasis on coordination issues between the construction industry and various disciplines (Project Architects, Electrical Engineers, Security and Fire Life Safety Consultants).

Mike is partnered DTR Consulting Services in expanding his independent door hardware services to bring our A/E Clients the same great level of service as he did when he was an employee of DTR.. Michael's new firm is Opening Consultants, Inc with offices located in Orange County, CA.

Jointly, his projects numbered over three hundred buildings throughout the U.S. and internationally, which include health care projects (OSHPD), public & private schools/ universities, city & county projects; and high end Class A office building projects. His experience in the field has assisted in retro-fit projects and coordination issues with contractors, saving our Clients both time and money.
